Fall Aeration and Overseeding

Lawn aeration involves the removal os small soil plugs or cores out of the lawn. Aeration is done mechanically with a machine having hollow tines mounted on a disc or drum. Core aeration extracts ½ to ¾ inch diameter cores of soil 1-2 inches deep and 2 inches apart and deposits these cores on your lawn. This process helps increase microorganisms that decompose thatch, increase water, nutrients and oxygen movement in the soil, relieves compaction and encourages further root growth. Aeration is typically done in late summer to early fall and is done in conjuction with overseeding the entire lawn.

Overseeding compensates for the natural slow down of the turfs reproduction. There are two major benefits to overseeding your lawn every 2-3 years.First overseeding helps maintain a thick lawn, which helps crowd out unwanted weeds and to introduce new varieties of grass that are more disease and drought resistant. We recommend overseeding and aeration are done together because the soil is now open and will allow the grass seeds to germinate in a more favorable environment.
